Terraria is Pretty Cool

You start off with a weak copper sword and a set of other weak tools. You are given a man who guides you, named guide. Fast forward an hour or so, and you are fighting a wall of flesh in the underworld with grenades made out of bees. Terraria has some of the best progression of any game. The simple idea of getting stronger materials to fight stronger bosses is addicting. This may seem boring on paper, but the incredible variety of weapons makes each playthrough a different one.

As stated before, you are as weak as a twig. Any slime or zombie can easily break every bone in your body. Get some wood, get a little armor and go underground searching for precious ores and trinkets. You’ve gotten a decent amount of defense now it’s time to fight a boss: The Eye of Cthulhu. The eye drops an ore that’s new to the world which will advance your armor and weapons. It seems that all is done, but there is an evil in the world. An evil called corruption (Or crimson, depending on if you pick it instead of corruption) with its own boss. After that boss is defeated, you can fight skeletron. Once skeletron is defeated, the dungeon is now available for exploration. You fight boss after boss, getting upgrades to your gear. Eventually, you venture into the underworld and fight the last boss of pre hardmode. Wait, pre hardmode? Yes! Right when you think you’re the most powerful you can be, Terraria presents you with a forced hardmode where enemies are stronger, corruption now spreads like disease, a new evil biome appears and new bosses start tormenting you.

With a hammer dropped from that underworld boss, you can break altars to generate new ores. Similar to when you first played, you must mine the weakest ore, then move up to the strongest ore with each pickaxe upgrade. Uh oh! “The air is getting colder around you…”. Have fun with the hardest boss you can fight at this point of the game with weak, pre hardmode weapons. To win against the trio of new bosses, you are forced to explore in your new environment, trying to get better gear and weapons. There are also now long crafting recipes that reward you with powerful items if you dedicate time to getting them. After that trio of bosses, a message calls you to explore the underground jungle. After a demonic jungle boss, that dungeon gets an upgrade, with harder enemies that hold better drops. As you have seen, each boss unlocks a new area or advancement that is vital for progression. Bosses aren’t easy, though. Terraria makes sure that each boss is different and unique, with their own gimmick. On top of gear and weapons, there are a handful of stationary buffs and potions that you can acquire. Whenever you think Terraria is getting boring, it hits you with a new event or boss. Even when you’re finished with the final boss of the game, there are still those long crafting recipes that give you the most powerful items.

Besides progression and fighting, Terraria has an incredible variety of items. Weapons, armor and accessories usually fall into a basic class of weapons. There are four classes:

  1. Mage: Alongside the health bar is a mana bar that regenerates over time and is used for magic based weapons. Weapons of the mage usually have good range and decent damage.

  2. Ranger: The ranger uses bullets crafted from various substances found around the world to operate guns. The range is range and the damage is all right.

  3. Melee: The melee class relies heavily on defense, as they are usually up in the enemy’s face, swinging a sword or something like that. However, many melee weapons later in the game send out projectiles with each swing. Range is below average, but the damage is high.

  4. Summoner: As you may have guessed, summoner summons minions that deal damage. Summoner is often regarded as the weakest class, but in reality, most of the summoner weapons output incredible damage. Range is average and damage is plentiful.

There’s even more variety of weapons with subclasses. Some examples of subclasses are the yoyos for the melee class, the sentries for the summoner class and the rocket launchers for the ranger class. However, you do not shape your class, your class shapes you. A single good sword drop, and you are a melee. There's no pressure if you don’t want to commit to a specific class, because you can use whatever weapons you want with whatever gear you would like. Also, events exist! At certain points of the game, random events can randomly happen at random times. Take the goblin invasion for example. If you have 200 health and have broken a shadow orb, goblins can approach and invade your home. If you successfully beat the goblins, then the goblin tinkerer NPC can be seen and recruited to your housing. The goblin tinkerer is a vital NPC and aids you heavily throughout the playthrough. You don’t have to wait, though. For almost every event and boss is a summon item that can be used to summon it.

To sum it all up, Terraria is a highly polished game that’s extremely fun. its progression is like no other, always wanting you to get that next weapon or that next piece of gear. Terraria encourages you to pick yourself up after failure, and better yourself for your next fight. There is little punishment for death, so you don't have to go scrambling for your items if you die. You are presented with so many play styles to choose from and there’s no real “wrong way” to play the game. I could never cover the entirety of Terraria in only five paragraphs, but a couple things that I want to point out are the incredible music, how amazing the pixel art is, the goofy atmosphere of the whole game, pets, mounts, movement accessories, the housing system and fishing. Also, you cannot hide from Terraria, because it is on the following platforms: PC, mobile, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PS3, Linux, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo 3DS and Classic Mac OS. Buy it now. Also, listen to the soundtrack, it’s pretty good.
